Tom Jones saw an opportunity when the shop he ran was closed. He immediately set to work to come up with a plan to buy the shop and run it as his own wine shop – something which he had long dreamt of doing.

Situated in the picturesque town of Whalley in Lancashire, The Whalley Wine Shop occupies an enviable position on the main high street, meaning that the shop is popular with locals and tourists alike. The shop stocks a huge range of wines, spirits and ales, and offers many that most people would not be familiar with, whilst also offering classics that Tom knows his customers will love.

As part of the dream set up for the shop, Tom invested into a By The Glass 8-bottle system, which has the unique feature of allowing customers to serve themselves using pre-paid cards. This has proved amazingly successful, as customers can try wines they’ve never tried before, as well as treat themselves to their usual favourites. Tom has now extended this concept, by introducing seating inside, and outside (when weather permits!) so that his customers can enjoy a fantastic glass of wine at the shop.

In their own words…

Coming into the second year, the next big step for us is the By The Glass machine. We’ve invested in the technology, I think it’s spot on, cutting edge, and it’s really going to be pushing wine retail forward over the next few years, and we’re really keen on getting started with it.
